Preventing Climate Crisis in Indonesia
Restoration Era is working with communities on the island of Java in Indonesia to restore mangrove estuaries and native tropical forests to prevent erosion.

These estuaries provide the densely populated island with protection from storm surges, coastal erosion, and prevent catastrophic flooding. In addition to this the mangroves support fishing livelihoods as they are the home for many species of fish and shellfish that support coastal communities.

Indonesia is very unique when it comes to mangroves. Many places in the world only have up to 5 mangrove species present in their estuaries. Indonesia can have up to 30! These estuaries are also some of the most productive carbon sinks in the world and are home to a wide array of biodiversity. These projects will provide jobs to people in need to restore these vital ecosystems, the mangroves will serve as protection to those in Java, and will improve traditional livelihoods for communities in Indonesia.

Indonesia also faces significant terrestrial deforestation leading to erosion, land slides, loss of habitat, and increased climate issues. Era is working with communities to restore their forests and implement sustainable agriculture practices.

Java needs environmental intervention, Now!
-
Java is home to one of the world's most populated cities, Jakarta, which is sinking due to erosion, overextraction of ground water, and rising sea levels. Millions of people are being impacted.

-
Trees prevent erosion, stabilize ground water, prevent flooding, and help against rising sea levels.

-
The island is experiencing significant coastal and mountain erosion that impacts daily life especially for the marginalized.

-
Era is working with communities to restore mangroves which stablize shorelines and provide economically for fishing communities.

-
Era is also working with government and communities to strategically reforest areas prone to landslides that cause daily difficulty for rural communities.

-
Reforestation addresses immediate needs, but systemic change is needed. A key part of this project is to work with communities to build long term solutions to move from environmental crisis to a harmonious relationship between people and nature on Java.
